MANOR LIFE ON THE GARDEN ROUTE – FANCOURT, SOUTH AFRICA
Montagu Street, Blanco, George 6530, South Africa

Set within a large private estate on South Africa’s Garden Route, Fancourt Hotel is surrounded by expansive greenery and framed by the Outeniqua Mountains. The setting is undeniably beautiful, with wide open spaces and a sense of calm that comes from being slightly removed from the main towns. The Manor House itself sits quietly within the estate, offering a more private and contained environment compared to the main hotel.

Arrival Experience

Arrival feels more like entering a country estate than a resort. The drive through the grounds, past golf courses and gardens, creates a sense of space and scale. The Manor House, originally a family home, has been converted into a small hotel, and that residential feel is still very present. The welcome was warm and genuine, with staff who were consistently friendly and attentive throughout the stay.

Accommodation

We stayed in a suite at the Manor House, part of Leading Hotels of the World, and this is  where the experience becomes more focused. All rooms here are suites, which is a strong point, offering generous space and a quieter, more private atmosphere. The style is traditional and reflects the age of the building — classic, but truth be told, somewhat dated in parts. It feels more like staying in an older private residence than a contemporary luxury hotel. While comfortable, spacious and homey the rooms would benefit from a face lift to bring them in line with modern expectations. That said, the Manor House remains the more appealing option within Fancourt if you are looking for something less mainstream.

Spa & Wellness

The spa is one of the stronger elements of the property. It is well designed and provides a calm environment to unwind. The heated indoor pool is particularly appealing — elegant and peaceful with a sauna, steam and cold plunge to complement the experience. It’s a pleasant space to spend a couple of hours.

Dining

Dining across the estate is varied, but the standout for us was the Italian restaurant, La Cantina at Fancourt. This is where the experience feels most lively and enjoyable, with a relaxed atmosphere and consistently good food. The menu focuses on classic Italian dishes, and great steaks paired with fantastic South African wine list. It’s an easy place to return to more than once during a stay.

A nice touch for Manor House guests is the complimentary afternoon tea served daily between 3pm and 5pm. This was one of the more enjoyable parts of the stay — a relaxe moment with a selection of snacks and freshly baked cake, served in a comfortable, homely setting. It adds to the residential feel of the Manor House and is a thoughtful inclusion.

Facilities

Fancourt is best known for its golf, and the courses are a major drawcard.  They are extensive  and well regarded, set against a very scenic backdrop.  Beyond golf, the estate offers a range wellness facilities – fully equipped gym, multiple swimming pools, tennis courts, bikes and even guided hikes a couple of times per week.

The Lux Traveller Loves

We loved the traditional feel of the Manor House, rich in history and charm. Daily complimentary afternoon tea and complimentary mini bar are a lovely touch. Loved bath amenities with bath bombs, scrubs, foot balm and other treats not very commonly found in hotels. The suites are very spacious and cosy, the staff friendly and gorgeous grounds were a pleasure to stroll around. All in all an excellent option for a comfortable Garden Route stay.
