Why Do Some Places Feel So Good?

As travel writers, we often describe a hotel as having “beautiful energy.” We say a safari lodge feels peaceful. A Japanese ryokan feels balanced. An overwater villa in the Maldives somehow makes us breathe more deeply the moment we arrive.

For years I believed those feelings were simply the result of beautiful architecture, thoughtful interiors and exceptional hospitality. Now, I wonder if there is something more.

Ironically, this journey didn’t begin in a luxury hotel. It began in a bookshop.

Just before Christmas last year, I came across The Calm & Happy Home by Feng Shui expert Kimberley Gallagher. Curious, I picked it up and began reading. What I expected was a book about interior styling. What I discovered instead was a fascinating philosophy about how the energy of our surroundings may quietly influence every aspect of our lives.

The idea was beautifully simple. If we spend most of our lives inside our homes, shouldn’t our homes actively support our health, relationships, happiness and career?

As someone who has spent the past twenty years travelling the world in search of extraordinary places, I found myself asking another question. Could this also explain why certain destinations resonate with us so deeply? The more I read, the more fascinated I became.

I reached out to Kimberley, believing there was a wonderful connection between her work and the philosophy behind The Lux Traveller. Luxury has never been simply about beautiful objects. True luxury is about how a place makes us feel. Fortunately, Kimberley agreed.

What followed was far more comprehensive than I had imagined. She completed a detailed Feng Shui analysis of my home before guiding me through a personal consultation, patiently explaining the energetic blueprint of the property and carefully helping me position every Feng Shui remedy in its correct location.

What impressed me most, however, wasn’t simply Kimberley’s knowledge. It was Kimberley herself. From our very first conversation, she was incredibly generous with both her time and her expertise. Every question was welcomed with genuine warmth, patience and kindness. There was never any pressure, never any complicated jargon designed to impress. Instead, Kimberley has a remarkable gift for making an ancient philosophy feel intelligent, practical and surprisingly easy to understand. Every recommendation had a purpose. Every adjustment came with an explanation.

Rather than telling me what to do, Kimberley helped me understand why each area of my home influences different aspects of life, from health and relationships to creativity, prosperity and career. Since completing the consultation and thoughtfully placing each remedy throughout my home, I have noticed something subtle but incredibly valuable. I feel more clarity. I think I am in the very beginning of this journey and look forward to learning more and inviting more joy, calm and happiness in my home and my life.

The very best luxury hotels have always understood something that Feng Shui has taught for thousands of years: beautiful spaces are never simply beautiful. They are designed to make us feel something.

Whether consciously inspired by Feng Shui or simply exceptional architecture, they create harmony. And perhaps that is why we remember them long after we return home. Kimberley Gallagher’s work ultimately isn’t about moving furniture or placing decorative objects. It is about creating environments that help us become the very best version of ourselves.

For me, what began with a chance encounter in a bookshop has become an entirely new way of looking at the world. I still travel to discover extraordinary destinations. But thanks to Kimberley, I have also discovered that the most important place we will ever invest in is the one we return to after every journey—our home.
