Where is Engelberg?
Nestled in the heart of the Swiss Alps, Engelberg is a hidden gem for luxury travellers seeking world-class outdoor adventures without the overwhelming crowds of Europe’s more famous resorts. Located just a 90-minute drive from Zurich, this charming alpine village offers a unique blend of Swiss tradition, modern luxury, and breathtaking natural beauty. Once a monastic settlement, Engelberg has evolved into a premier year-round destination while retaining its authentic, laid-back charm. Whether you visit in winter for skiing or in summer for hiking and climbing, Engelberg captivates with its pristine landscapes and high-end offerings.
Best Place to Stay: Kempinski Palace Engelberg
For those who appreciate the finer things in life, the Kempinski Palace Engelberg is the ultimate place to stay. This stunning, new five-star hotel seamlessly blends Belle Époque elegance with contemporary luxury. Upon arrival, guests are welcomed into a grand lobby adorned with intricate chandeliers and plush furnishings, setting the tone for an unforgettable stay. The spacious rooms and suites boast panoramic mountain views, while the spa and wellness centre provide the perfect relaxation after a day of adventure, with an infinity pool overlooking the peaks. Dining at the hotel is also a delight, with gourmet cuisine crafted from the finest Swiss ingredients.
Best Places for On-the-Mountain Lunch
A luxury holiday in Engelberg is incomplete without indulging in some exceptional mountain dining. The region offers several fantastic options, each with its own charm and spectacular views. Here are three of my favourites:
Panorama A La Carte Restaurant on Mt. Titlis Sitting at an altitude of over 3,000 metres, Panorama Restaurant lives up to its name with sweeping views of the surrounding peaks. The menu features a delightful selection of Swiss specialities, including perfectly prepared rösti, rich cheese fondue, and fresh alpine trout. The combination of exquisite cuisine and breathtaking scenery makes it a must-visit for those looking to recharge in style.
Lago Torbido This hidden gem is located near Trübsee at the Middle station, next to the gondola and ski lifts. It offers a cosy yet sophisticated dining experience with a terrace looking over the ski fields and the mountains; absolute gem on a sunny day. The ambiance is warm and inviting, with a fireplace that makes it the perfect spot for a long, leisurely lunch and fur covered chairs on the outdoor terrace. Lago Torbido specialises in Italian-inspired dishes, with handmade pasta and pizza from Italian wood fire oven.
Bistro 1800 is located next door to Lago Torbido and offers a fantastic selection of hearty mountain fare. We loved duck crockets, burrata with poached peaches and delicious steaks. A perfect treat before heading back out on the slopes.
What Makes Engelberg a Fantastic Destination Year-Round?
Engelberg is an excellent choice for outdoor enthusiasts, thanks to its well-developed infrastructure and diverse range of activities across all seasons.
Upgraded ski lifts ensure fast and comfortable access to the slopes. The highlight is the Titlis Rotair, the world’s first revolving cable car, offering 360-degree views as it transports skiers to the top of Mount Titlis. With over 80 kilometres of ski runs, Engelberg caters particularly well to intermediate skiers, with smooth, manageable slopes that are perfect for improving technique and building confidence. The resort is also highly family-friendly, with excellent ski schools and dedicated beginner zones.
Best Ski School – Supreme Ski School
We couldn’t recommend Supreme Ski School highly enough. We skied with Claus, one of the senior teachers, and have improved a lot in just three days. Claus has a great personality and loves teaching, as well as having fun on the slopes. Supreme prides itself on having only the best full time teachers who offer private tuition and focus on helping their guests improve their skills.
When the snow melts, Engelberg transforms into a paradise for hikers, climbers, and mountain bikers. The region boasts over 500 kilometres of hiking trails, including themed routes like the Alpine Cheese Trail, where you can discover local cheesemaking traditions. Thrill-seekers can take on via ferratas such as the Graustock or Fürenwand, while families can enjoy activities like summer tobogganing, rope parks, and picturesque lake walks. The Brunni and Trübsee areas provide fantastic spots for leisurely hikes and scenic picnics, making Engelberg an ideal summer retreat.
All in All
After spending four days skiing and exploring Engelberg, I can confidently say this resort deserves a place on the list of top luxury destinations in the world. The combination of breathtaking scenery, high-end accommodation, gourmet dining, and excellent facilities makes it a dream for discerning travellers. Whether you visit in winter for skiing or in summer for hiking and adventure, Engelberg offers an unforgettable alpine experience with all the charm and elegance one could hope for. If you’re searching for an under-the-radar luxury destination that delivers on all fronts, Engelberg should be at the top of your list.
