VIP SERVICE
Don’t be surprised if a very large brown bear plonks himself close by just as you hop into the stone bath at Canberra’s exotic Jamala Wildlife Lodge.
As you sink under the warm bubbles, you can watch the bear and his mates take a stretch, a sniff around, then settle down on the straw and nod off.
The action takes place in five luxurious bungalows where only centimetres of glass separate guests from their favourite animals.
Lions, cheetahs, tigers and cute as pie Malayan Sun Bears star in the other four bungalows that front enclosures at Canberra’s National Zoo and Aquarium.
Be prepared for many magical moments at this unique property, that offers three, five-star accommodation hubs where guests experience up close and personal encounters with some of the world’s most dangerous and endangered animals.
There are six giraffe treehouses and Ushaka Lodge with seven luxurious rooms inside the main lodge, which boasts a shark tank and a private pool and spa.
The chic bungalows are spacious with large bathrooms, floor to ceiling windows – perfect for viewing those animals and canopied beds. Carved African bowls and ornaments and leopard skin throws add to the African-themed decor.
Guests are served a delicious African-inspired three-course dinner in The Cave, where often nearby residents – two white lions and hyenas, venture from their dens to take a look – through the glass of course. Private zoo tours and breakfast are included.
Located at the Canberra’s National Zoo and Aquarium, owner, Canberra businessman Richard Tindale’s aim is to share the wonders of the animal kingdom with the public.
Funds from Jamala stays are used to support breeding programs.
Don’t turn on the television here, the real life shenanigans of animals outside your window provide much better entertainment.
Guests fall asleep serenaded by the animal zoo choir with an occasional roar from the lions to let you know who is boss.
