Melbourne is Sydney’s funkier younger sister and a weekend here is always a treat. The Lux Traveller loves exploring luxurious accommodation, gourmet restaurants, cocktails at the funky new bars in this hip busy city.
On this occasion we decided to try out obeof the city’s grandest hotels – The Park Hyatt Melbourne
The hotel’s location is perfect – set back from Parliament square, away from the noisy tram lines and yet just a stone’s throw away from the exciting shopping in Collins Street.
When you walk through the doors of the Park Hyatt, the first thing you notice is the gorgeous scent that permeates all throughout the hotel. Many Asian hotels do this yet it is a rarity in Australia and a very pleasant one at that as Park Hyatt’s custom designed scent is divine.
Even though I arrived very late at night, the check-in was quick and a manager on duty took the time to show us upstairs and around the suite.
Ambassador Suite
The suite won us over even before we walked in. Don’t you just love double doors leading to your signature suite – it just makes you feel special and made for a great start to a romantic weekend.
The suite itself is gorgeous. Well, it has to be fit for an Ambassador, doesn’t it? And of course it has to be special enough for occasional romantics like ourselves.
The suite sprawls over a massive 165 sq m and is one of the largest in the Park Hyatt Melbourne.
It is furnished in a classically elegant style and does have a number of wow factors including a spacious living room with a fireplace.I admit, I have a soft spot for fireplaces – what better way to end a busy day than with a glass of champagne in front of the fireplace?
An equally spacious bedroom with a very comfy bed.
There is more wow from the huge walk in robe and an equally spacious marble bathroom, double spa bath with a view and beautiful Aesop toiletries.
The Butler’s kitchen at the back is perfect for entertaining and a second powder room is always welcome in a big suite. You don’t want your visitors roaming through your en-suite.
The following day we discovered the warm 25 metre indoor lap pool, sauna and steam room facilities, a good size gym and, most importantly, the great Spa.
Once I saw the Spa menu my plans for the afternoon were set – a ginger renewal followed by a Signature facial.
My facial therapist was amazing and I have to say my face was glowing for at least 24hrs after the treatment. We highly recommend including the spa treatment in your stay but to avoid disappointment book ahead as the Spa is nearly fully booked every weekend.
Park Hyatt also has an outdoor tennis court and is the only hotel in the Melbourne CBD to offer this. If the weather was a little better we would’ve definitely made a good use of it.
Dining at the Park Hyatt
Breakfast is a very pleasant affair. On the weekends it is served till 11am and offers an excellent selection of fresh berries and fruit, nuts and honey, smoked meats and fish, excellent egg station and anything you like on demand. Five stars!
I especially like sitting on the small landing that has only a couple of tables on it. It feels a little like your own designer dining room and is very intimate.
The same restaurant, Radii, serves dinner. We didn’t have a chance to try it but it has a very good reputation.
Executive Lounge – This is an excellent place for an evening cocktail. The lounge is very cozy and there is another fireplace here! The tables are set quite far apart from each other, the guests are elegant and the canapés are delightful, think fresh strawberries, smoked salmon, selection of gourmet cheeses, dips and vegetables. This is one of the best lounges we have found in Australia.
The wines served are local Australian but if you fancy something a little more special you can order a bottle of French Champagne from the room service menu and they’ll be happy to serve it for you in the lounge.
