Fit To Promise

There are luxury hotels, and then there are grand hotels that belong to a different era of hospitality. Hotel Hassler Roma is undoubtedly one of the latter. Perched at the very top of the Spanish Steps, overlooking one of the most beautiful cities in the world, this legendary Roman address has maintained an extraordinary sense of elegance, exclusivity and tradition.

Having stayed in many of Rome’s finest hotels over the years, I returned to the Hassler recently and was reminded of what makes it so special. While many luxury properties are embracing contemporary design and increasingly relaxed service, the Hassler remains wonderfully committed to the art of classic European hospitality. From the moment you arrive, there is a sense that you are somewhere rather exceptional.

Location

It would be difficult to imagine a more prestigious address in Rome. Positioned directly above the Spanish Steps, beside the beautiful Trinità dei Monti church, the Hassler enjoys a commanding location overlooking the rooftops and historic domes of the Eternal City.

Some of Rome’s best shopping is literally at your feet. The elegant boutiques of Via Condotti, Via Borgognona and the surrounding streets are just a short stroll away, while the Trevi Fountain and Villa Borghese are easily accessible.

Despite its central position, the hotel feels remarkably secluded from the busy streets below. Stepping inside is like entering a private world of polished marble, beautiful furnishings and discreet luxury.

Accommodation

During my recent visit, I stayed in a lovely Junior Suite with a private balcony, a particularly delightful feature in a city as beautiful as Rome. The accommodation reflected the hotel’s classical character, with elegant furnishings, refined detailing and a wonderfully residential atmosphere. Rather than following passing interior design trends, the Hassler embraces timeless Italian style.

Having a private balcony added another dimension to the experience. There is something particularly romantic about being able to step outside, enjoy the Roman air and appreciate the atmosphere of this historic neighbourhood from the privacy of your own suite.

For guests seeking an even more extraordinary experience, the hotel’s signature suites are among Rome’s most impressive. The magnificent Hassler Penthouse occupies the eighth floor, offering 330 square metres of luxurious living space, two master bedrooms, a grand piano, private cocktail lounge and expansive terraces with spectacular views across the city. With private lift access and dedicated butler service, it offers the privacy and sophistication of an exceptional Roman residence.

Dining

One of my absolute highlights was breakfast in the Palm Court garden. Recently redesigned by celebrated French decorator Jacques Garcia, this beautiful courtyard is a delightful oasis of greenery, elegant striped upholstery, Roman sculptures and old-world charm.

Breakfast here is a wonderfully civilised affair. The atmosphere is peaceful and sophisticated, the service attentive and polished, and the garden provides a beautiful setting to start the day before exploring Rome. It is exactly the kind of experience I appreciate in a truly great hotel. Rather than rushing through breakfast, you find yourself lingering over another coffee, enjoying the surroundings and the pleasure of being so beautifully looked after.

For serious gastronomy, the Hassler is home to Michelin-starred Imàgo, one of Rome’s most celebrated dining destinations. Under the direction of Chef Andrea Antonini, the restaurant offers a contemporary interpretation of Italian cuisine accompanied by spectacular panoramic views across the city.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2026, Imàgo has recently unveiled a redesigned dining room, open kitchen and exclusive Kitchen Table experience, offering guests a fascinating insight into the creativity behind its cuisine.

The hotel also offers the elegant Salone Eva, intimate Carmen’s Bar and a panoramic seventh-floor terrace, each contributing to its distinctive character.

Service & Atmosphere

For me, this is where the Hassler truly excels.

Excellent service is expected at a five-star hotel, but what I experienced at the Hassler went considerably beyond the usual standards.

One of the loveliest details was being greeted by name by the porter at the front entrance. Such a seemingly small gesture makes an enormous difference. It gives guests a genuine sense of recognition and belonging, something that even some of the world’s most expensive hotels struggle to achieve.

Throughout my stay, the service was polished, professional and genuinely attentive, without ever feeling intrusive.

Equally impressive was the clientele and the overall atmosphere.

The Hassler attracts an exceptionally elegant international crowd. Guests dress beautifully, whether enjoying breakfast in the garden, meeting for afternoon tea or arriving for dinner. There is a sense of occasion about staying here that I find increasingly rare in today’s luxury hotel scene.

It is sophisticated without being pretentious, formal without feeling uncomfortable, and glamorous in a wonderfully understated way.

The hotel remains family-owned, now guided by sixth-generation hoteliers Roberto and Veruschka Wirth, and that continuity is evident in its distinctive personality and attention to detail.

Wellness

The Hassler is also entering an exciting new chapter in wellness. Its ambitious new Amorvero Spa project will introduce an extensive sanctuary beneath the Spanish Steps, featuring a heated indoor swimming pool, thermal experiences, treatment rooms and facilities dedicated to relaxation and rejuvenation.

Developed in partnership with renowned skincare house Biologique Recherche, the new wellness offering is intended to bring a more contemporary, results-driven dimension to the hotel’s traditional luxury experience.

The Lux Traveller Loves

  • Exceptional, personalised service, including being welcomed by name at the entrance.
  • Breakfast in the beautiful Palm Court garden.
  • The wonderfully elegant, well-dressed international clientele.
  • A charming Junior Suite with a private balcony.
  • An unbeatable location at the top of the Spanish Steps.
  • The sense of occasion and traditional European glamour.

All In All

The Hassler is a reminder that true luxury is not always about the newest design, the largest suite or the latest fashionable concept.

Sometimes it is about traditions that have been perfected over generations, the reassuring familiarity of impeccable service, and an atmosphere of elegance that cannot easily be recreated.

What impressed me most during this visit was the hotel’s ability to make every interaction feel special. From the porter greeting me by name to the beautifully orchestrated breakfast service and the exceptionally sophisticated atmosphere, everything contributed to an elevated experience.

For travellers who appreciate grand European hotels, impeccable manners, classical beauty and genuine exclusivity, Hotel Hassler Roma remains one of the most distinguished addresses in the Eternal City.

It is a hotel where dressing for dinner still feels entirely appropriate, where hospitality is treated as an art, and where the glamour of Rome’s golden age remains very much alive.
